Book sale Nov. 10 at Phoenix College

booksEvery year the Honors program at Phoenix College holds a massive book sale that helps students pay for books and tuition. This year the 17th annual Padriac Hill Memorial Scholarship Fund Book Sale will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in Sophomore Square at Phoenix College, 1202 W. Thomas Rd. (MAP)

Free haircuts for teachers

hairdresserAn Ahwatukee-area salon is offering free haircuts for teachers on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Classroom educators can get a shampoo, cut and light styling — a $40 value — for free noon to 5 p.m. at Robert Paul Salon, 4206 E. Chandler Blvd., Phoenix.

To get the haircut, teachers must show their credentials (like a school photo i.d.) and donate a non-perishable food item or bottled water. Items will be given to a Chandler food bank. The salon will provide refreshments and give away some product freebies.

The deal is only good at the Robert Paul Salon’s Chandler Boulevard location. For questions, call (480) 759-0909.

Layaway: Not just for Christmas anymore

Layaway, once seen just as a tool to help shoppers budget their Christmas purchases wisely, is bleeding into the mainstream as the economic slump hits more people. Just look at this Associated Press story about parents using layaway to manage their back-to-school shopping.

Back-to-school books and backpacks

With the first day of school fast approaching, these deals may come in handy:

Borders is currently holding a sale that offers one free book when you buy four. Of course, the free item is the least expensive item — and boxed sets count as one book for this sale. The deal, which ends Monday, July 27, is good in stores and online.

In stores only, spend $50 or more and get a free backpack ($19.99 value).

Finally, “back-to-school essentials” are discounted up to 30 percent.

East Valley schools offer free meals in summer

Free lunch and breakfast at East Valley schools this summerThe Gilbert Unified School District, along with Chandler, Mesa and Apache Junction unified school districts, are offering free breakfasts and lunches for children 18 and younger at various locations throughout the East Valley.

Children do not have to attend that school. Adults can also purchase a meal for a low price.
