Camp for free in nearby mountain parks

September 23rd, 2009, 1:49 pm by Mandy Zajac

map1Maricopa County parks are giving outdoorsy vacationers a deal on fall camping. Five of the metro-fringing Sonoran Desert parks are offering a buy-one, get-one-free deal on camping Oct. 1 through Nov. 12.

Campers who pay for one night at a tent or RV campsite will get their second night free. The deal includes guided hikes, full moon walks, kids’ activities and other programs provided daily by park rangers and staff. Each of the parks also offer hiking and biking trails and scenic views.

At $15 to $20 per campsite, it’s a pretty cheap getaway.

The deal is good at Usery Mountain Regional Park, McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Cave Creek Regional Park, Estrella Mountain Regional Park and White Tank Mountain Regional Park.

The details:

> Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis; reservations are not accepted. Simply ask the attendant at the park entry station for the deal.

> Developed campsites are $20 per night; semideveloped sites are $15 per night. Developed ones have electrical and water hookups, dump stations, picnic tables, fire rings, grills and restrooms with flushing toilets and showers. Semideveloped sites lack the hookups and dump stations.

> If you arrive after the park entry station has closed, you must use the self-pay station and write “Buy one, get one free” on the front of the self-pay envelope. If you don’t, you’ll be charged for your second night.

> The offer is good for one free night per family or group per week. No rain checks will be issued. It is not valid for group campground reservations.

> Park entry fees, about $6 per car, are waived for campers.
